Old-style movie posters sure are cluttered. I think the layering present in posters like these is fascinating. While they could have been a lot simpler and still be representative of the film in question, the fact that the designers crammed in as many characters as possible, or perhaps a tableau (or several tableaux) of something from the plot, in addition to GOBS of text, adds to the overall excitement-factor. It's like a trailer in poster form! Or like being force-fed. Either way, the excessive imagery is visually impacting and the multiple elements work together very cohesively to convey the essence of the movie. Additionally, the use of scale to highlight the star of the film, or to differentiate the characters from the tableaux, is an effective way to quickly give the viewer an idea of who is in the movie. As a means of advertising and building hype for a film, this is a very smart thing to do if you're going to have the clutter.
